March 2015 Favorites

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Okay! Even though I'd literally add everything mentioned in my Spring Beauty post to this list, these are things I've been using consistently this past month, and been madly in love with. I'm a serious product polygamist, don't tell me how to love!

Too Faced Natural Matte palette - If you've seen my review, I mean, duh! I'm pretty sure I can even add it to my "favorite palettes of all time" category. Along with the Chocolate Bar. I mean seriously, Too Faced has got it down with their eyeshadows! Real winners.

Spring 2015 Beauty Picks

Thursday, March 26, 2015

Wether the weather around you let's you believe it or not, it's a good time to refresh and lighten up your make up!

I am by no means a trend setter, or even trendy at that, nor do I run out to the stores to get all the new spring collections (*ahuem* I said ALL ok), and I know spring is all about out with the old in with the new, spring cleaning frenzy... I just thought I'd share new products I'm excited about but also things I look forward to get back out and play with in the spring.

Product Review | Too Faced Natural Matte Palette

Friday, March 20, 2015

Oops I did it again! Though nobody's surprised...Yes it is true what they say, I got yet another neutral matte palette but OH MY GOD! Can we talk about this Too Faced Natural Matte Palette?
a picture of Too Faced Natural Matte palette
a picture of Too Faced Natural Matte palette
Lemme just start by saying I LOVE IT! Just like their Chocolate Bar palette (review here), Too Faced knocks it out of the park with the texture of these shadows.

Remember how I said I wasn't WOWED with the texture in the Tartelette palette (review here)? Well it's not cause they're matte, because these shadows are a CREAMY DREAM! No chalky texture, not too powdery. Buttah, girl, just like buttah!!

This palette offers 9 shadows (6 small, 3 big) and is actually a matte version of their Natural Eyes Palette, if you are familiar. If you already own that one, this might be a bit annoying because 4 of the shades are the exact same... (Heaven, Nudie, Cashmere Bunny and Sexpresso). But I've never owned it, so I'm quite pleased.

It offers a nice range of neutral shades that are perfect from day to night. Though it might not have as big a range as the Tartelette, I do believe it is more universally wearable. You just can't go wrong. Any combination will look great on pretty much everyone.

You get less shadows than the Tartelette but more than the Naked Basics palettes. At $36 it's a great bang for your buck! Just like all of these, it is also compact and great for traveling. But because it's so creamy and easy to blend and the range is perfection, this is hands down my favorite pick for neutral mattes. [insert basic bitch statement, i.e. : I just can't even]

As they say, an image is worth a thousand words so here ya go!

Overview | Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipsticks

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know I loooove the Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color lipsticks. To this date, Touch of Spice is one of my most reached for lip products. It's just nice with everything. Beyond that, the texture of these lipsticks is like none I've ever tried before. It effortlessly just glides on the lips with even & strong color pay off. It's so smooth and doesn't dry you lips whatsoever which is really nice for a matte lippie. I think the most unique thing about it too is that it's a super thin formula, it feels like you're wearing nothing! The feel/texture is a bit similar to the Rimmel Show Off Matte Lip Velvets but a tad less dry. These really are nice, well, "creamy mattes"! And they stay comfortable on your lips throughout wear. LOVE IT!

As my obsession with the Touch of Spice grew, the logical step was to get all the shades, duh! Have you met me? However I stayed away from the colors on the lighter side of the spectrum (mainly nudes) because I just didn't think they would suit me.

NOTD | Pretty in Pink

Monday, March 16, 2015

Okay you guys, let me know if you hate/don't care for Mani Monday because I am on a roll baby!! And I kinda love it, but again if you don't, it's so over!

I got this cute bubble gum? cotton candy? pink (I'm the worst at describing colors) from Milani in my latest Ipsy bag and I just figured hey why not?! I have no idea how this will hold up but the formula was a bit streaky, but overall pretty easy to apply and dried quickly. I can keep you updated on my thoughts of this polish.

For now, may I present you : Milani Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Doll Face

Aaaahh I can almost smell the fresh bloom of spring! That or the polish fumes are really making me crazy!

Have a lovely week!

Product Review | Tartelette palette

Friday, March 13, 2015

Ok, this is something I hesitated for a LONG time to get.  I'm letting you know how I feel about it now that I have caved in and played with it for a while.

The Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette ($44/53$CA) offers 12 (all-matte, duh) shades.
a picture of the Tarte Tartelette Eyeshadow Palette
What I love about it is that it's well, for the sake of repeating, all matte. Not only that, you get 12 shades all still in a compact format. The array of colors is mainly in the nude/neutral family but you also get a row of rosy/purple shades which is what really drew me in.
a picture of the Tarte Tartelette Eyeshadow Palette
a picture of the Tarte Tartelette Eyeshadow Palette
If you look at each row, they are pretty much their own little quad. Sure you can venture out, but it makes it a fool proof way for you to pick colors if you're unsure. The first row would be your warm browns, middle row your purple "neutrals" and last row your sorta cooler toned neutrals. So you really have a nice mix of "every day" colors.

As far as the formula is concerned, I know there are mixed reviews about it, but I personally like it. I find them to be creamy and not too powdery (which can be tricky when it comes to matte shadows), they have good color pay off and they also blend very easily. I wouldn't say I'm blown away by the texture of these shadows, but I also have no constructive criticism to give. There's nothing wrong with them, I think it's cause they are matte you know?

Now is this a MUST HAVE palette? I find it great to have warmer and cooler shades in one palette as well as some purple hues (which are my favorite for brown eyes).  If you compare, for example, to the Urban Decay Naked Basics 1 & 2 (you can see my review on the first one here), you'd need to get both palettes to get that range and only end up with 10 shadows for $58/68$CA. So you know you get 12 shades in a wider range and in ONE compact palette, so it's even more practical for traveling, oh and for cheaper. However, if you already own one or both, you probably have a preference as far as tone is concerned, and you don't necessarily need to step out of them. Or if you only like a certain range and don't need that many shades, then pick your favorite and then it's just $29/34$C you know?

Also, If you already own one or a few solid all matte neutral palettes, you probably don't need this. But if you don't, this is a great add to your shadow collection. It's a safe way to play with mattes. If you're like me and you don't NEED this one, but are in love with the colors, I still say go for it! I mean I do not regret this purchase at all!

Bottom line ; great quality/price, good basic all-matte palette, nice array of colors, great for traveling (compact and has a great big mirror that stands up straight)!

Hope this was helpful! What is your favorite matte palette??

Talk to you soon,

Top 5 under 5 | Drugstore Gems Under $5

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

I can't believe I haven't done this yet! BUT better late than never. Here are my top 5 beauty products under 5 dollars (I tried to make sure  it was under 5 US and CA, here's hoping). They are in no particular order but here we go!
a pictures of products under $5 : aussie 3 minute miracle, rimmel scandeleyes waterproof kohl kajal, wet n wild mega last lip color, wet n wild color icon eyeshadwo trio, rimmel 60 seconds nail polish
1. Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color (my pick : Mauve Outta Here) - I literally grabbed this out of impulse, for that shade in particular, expecting not a whole lot, I mean it's a 2$ lipstick! Well, color me impressed! Not only is this shade one of my favorites in my collection, I had no complaints about the formula. It wasn't drying, it applied nice and smoothly, and it lasted pretty decently (I'd carry it around to reapply, but it's not like you have to constantly do so.). Highly recommend you check them out, and they come in an array of beautiful/wearable shades.

2. Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio (my pick : Sweet As Candy) - This is a long time favorite. Their eyeshadows are surprisingly pigmented and blendable. And for the price? Definitely my favorite drugstore  powder shadows as far as bang for your buck is concerned! (PS: I love me the Maybelline Color Tattoos (cream shadows) but they are a tad more than $5). I picked Sweet As Candy, because it was my first love, but Walking on Eggshells, Silent Treatment and Knock on Wood are also great picks! I mean hello! can we talk about this pigmentation?? Look!

3. Rimmel 60 seconds nail polish - I did an overview of the Rita Ora collection last summer, and just fell in love with this formula! Dries quickly, the colors are solid and it lasts on my nails as much as a higher end brand.
a picture of Rimmel 60 seconds nail polish in Midnight Rendezvous, Do Not Disturb, Breakfast in Bed, Lose your Lingerie
4. Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal - These have been my go to eyeliners for years! The nude is great to give you a wide eye look (DO NOT use white on your waterline, why is that a thing? Stop. BEIGE GIRL, BEIGE) and the black one lives in my purse and it seems it got eaten alive so it's no where to be seen here, but...It's a must! I also enjoyed venturing out in more fun colors to switch it up!

5. Aussie Moist 3 minute miracle - I know this is a bit harder to find in Canada (your best bet is Walmart, and if you see it, stock up), but this is a product I cannot live without. I've tried other hair masks and whatnot and this just does more for my hair. I use this in place of my regular conditioner about twice a week. Game changer. I always keep a backup of this.

Do you have any go to products that are under $5? Please let us know in the comments! If you like these kind of post, I can do under $10 or even drugstore favorites in general! Yay? Nay?

NOTD : Inbetweeners

Monday, March 9, 2015

2 for 2! Another Mani Monday post to start off this week!

I'm slowly wanting to lighting things up with spring approaching, and you know we changed the time and everything, so it's coming!! It's just that weird in between time where you know it's getting closer, and you can't wait but you're just not feeling it, cause the weather, urgh.

Butter London's Scoundrel is a beautiful mauve color that's sorta the perfect middle ground of taupe and lilac, which is just what I want for this time of year. On their website it even says it can look darker or lighter depending on what you wear. It doesn't get much more transitional than that!
PS: You can also find Butter London at Sephora

Haul | Birthday Goodies From Sephora

Friday, March 6, 2015

It was recently my birthday and I was spoiled enough to receive Sephora gift cards from my dogs (well my husband wrote cards from the dogs...YES WE ARE THOSE PEOPLE! We are weird, deal with it).

Needless to say they've been put to good use! I usually make several small orders online because shipping is always free and you get samples with each order...Cheap or genius?
I'm not trying to brag or "show off", simply thought you might want to see what kinds of things are on my shopping list! So here are a few things I've ordered and received :
a picture of benefit cheek me out, glamglow dual cleanse, too faced soul mates ross & rachel, anastasia dip brow pomade dark brown, #12 brush
a picture of Glamglow Powermud Dualcleanse Treatment
a picture of Glamglow Powermud Dualcleanse Treatment
GLAMGLOW POWERMUD Dualcleanse Treatment ($19/21$C) - I picked up the smaller one cause I wasn't sure if I'd like it and I couldn't commit to the bigger size. I've raved about the Supermud Clearing Treatment before and the matching cleanser, but I think it's not looking good for this guy...It's a mud to oil mask that gently deep cleanses...but I just don't think I like it! Except the green apple smell, yummy!
a picture of Too Faced Soul Mates Ross & Rachel blushing bronzer
a picture of Too Faced Soul Mates Ross & Rachel blushing bronzer
Too Faced Soul Mates Blushing Bronzer // Ross & Rachel ($34/42$C) - Anyone that knows me, knows that I'm obsessed with the show Friends (no, really, it's unhealthy), and well you guys know I'm obsessed with makeup. COMBINE THE TWO AND ADD CUTE PACKAGING?! What's a girl to do?! They also have a Carrie & Big which is more of a peachy/orange shade, and they are limited edition. YES, super gimmicky, but what can I say? It looks lovely on my fair skin too! Really gives a healthy glow, I'm in love! These are limited edition btw!
a picture of Anastasia Dipbrow pomade in dark brown & brush #12
Anastasia DIPBROW Pomade // Dark Brown & Brush #12 ($18ea./23$ea.) - I really wanted to step up my eyebrow game as the shape of them has been all kinds of whack lately (they grow long and curly and unruly so I have to create "holes" while trimming to keep them under control). I caved in and finally got this pomade. I'm not sure if it's the right shade yet, it's REALLY hard to choose online! But I think it works! I really went all out and also got me the brush because well why not? And the Anastasia spooley is just...I can't explain it, it's just the best.
a picture of Benefit Cheek me out
a picture of Benefit Cheek me out (swatch)
a picture of Benefit Cheek me out (swatch, blended out)
Benefit Cheek Me Out! ($13/16$C) - I mentioned this on the Facebook page, and well I couldn't resist. This set comes with travel size versions of the Posietint and High beam. I'm actually very excited to try these as I've never tried any of their "liquid" face products and have been wanting to for a while!

That's it so far! All comments made are based solely on first impressions. Let me know if you'd like full reviews on any of these products and what products are on YOUR shopping list for your next Sephora trip!

Pour some honey on me | Honey skincare

Wednesday, March 4, 2015

I was having a bit of a skin crisis lately; irritation, dryness, redness, inflammation. It's ALL bad. Every now and then (I fall apaaart! You were thinking it too..Ok let's carry on) I try a product that doesn't agree with my skin and it just goes batshit crazy. I'm not even going to apologize for my language, it is what it is.

First step is to stop using whatever new products I've been testing (sometimes hard to tell which specific one it so I cut everything "unfamiliar"), and then to be SUPER gentle with my skin. Like ridiculously bland as far as ; face wash, toner, moisturizer.

When it comes to actually treating the skin, that's when I like me some honey! Honey is a powerful gift from nature ; soothing, antibacterial and actually helps promote healing, packed with antioxidants and moisturizing. Bottom line, it's the bomb dot com (I need more coffee, forgive me) and exactly what my damaged skin needs.

Right now I am OBSESSED (double bold, double underline, double obsessed) with Lush Brazened Honey Fresh Mask ($6.95). This mask you keep in the fridge is good up to two weeks. You get a couple uses in each jar so make sure that's the only mask you use in that time frame so none of it goes to waste! It's a deep cleansing mask but it's also gentle enough to use on sensitive/dry skin. It says for oily skin on the website, but from my end, I would disagree and say all skin types... It also exfoliates and softens. This is your "do it all" mask, really I'm impressed and thankful.
a picture of Lush Brazened Honey Fresh Face Mask (review)
I wanted to pose the mask with the honey bear but his eyes creeped me out so he's looking away haha!
a picture of Lush Brazened Honey Fresh Face Mask (review)

If the "deep cleanse" scares your irritated skin, you could also opt for their Love Lettuce Fresh Mask, which also stars honey and offers a lot of the same benefits, but is possibly a tad gentler. Also, most of their fresh masks have honey in them, so you know, they're on to something!

I also love THEFACESHOP Real Nature Honey Sheet Mask (around $2 per mask I believe) which I've used to rescue my skin before. I love how convenient it is, you can just keep a few in your house so it's always there, and also great for traveling! It literally speeds up the healing process sooo much after just one mask. Helps with radiance and moisture. And all I have is this shitty instagram pic! Yay!

A photo posted by Valerie S. (@blossominblush) on

If you don't want to shell out money or are just unsure about these, you can also literally just take the honey in your cupboard (ideally raw and organic honey but you know, you do what you can!), smear it all over your face, let it set a bit (at least 10 min) and rinse off. It's a bit messier but you'll notice your skin will be brighter and soft after.

You also don't need to wait for your skin to freak out to incorporate some honey in your routine. There's so many lovely products that use this natural wonder. For example :
a picture of Honey skincare : Hey honey take it off, Reve de Miel, Honeymania
You already know I LOVE my Nuxe Reve de Miel lip balm ($19US/17$C)! And Nuxe also has a whole honey line, which I'm super curious about.

When my skin is in better shape, I've enjoyed using this Hey honey take it off mask ($29, I received mine in an Ipsy bag). It's one of those cool masks you let dry and peel off of your face, so it literally also takes off a tiny layer of skin (obviously nothing close to a professional peel) and leaves it brighter and smoother. I don't like this when my skin is very dry or irritated even though there is honey...I still find it to be a tad drying but super effective if you skin can handle it!

And my fav body butter is the Honeymania by The Body Shop ($20)...Coincidence I think not?

Bottom line, honey is a wonderful ingredient and can be used in many different ways. These are just some of the products that I've used and loved.

Do you have any recommendations for honey skincare products? Let me know in the comments below!

Talk to you soon,

-Val

NOTD : Dark & Stormy

Monday, March 2, 2015

I'm all for Mani Monday! I don't know about the weather in your neck of the woods, but by SoCal standards, it's been shitty lately ; cold (ok my Northern friends, "cool") and rainy. Though spring is technically approaching it sure doesn't feel like it, so I'm going to stick with my dark, gloomy and weather appropriate polishes.

I'm actually NOT wearing an Essie nail polish (I know...How could I?), but it's fun to showcase other brands ain't it? I actually own a few Butter London polishes but this one is BY FAR my favorite. It's so different than what I usually gravitate towards, but it's so pretty and I was instantly drawn to it.

The Black Knight (I even love the name) is this gorgeous sheered out black polish with multicolored glitter. I'm not usually big on glitter, but something about this baby...
