Product Review | Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Foundation

Oh man...

If you follow the blog's Facebook page (click and like!) you may have seen that I posted a sorta sad little "first impressions" on this foundation. I wasn't planning on it, but I flipped my camera to take a selfie (don't judge me) and I was just horrified by what I saw haha

The Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Foundation is one that has gotten a lot of mixed reviews since it's release. I was convinced it would work for me and decided to give it a try. It's marketed as this super awesome foundation that "improves skin's appearance every minute you’re in it. With the antioxidant power of Actyl-C, a more durable form of vitamin C." Sounds great right? Well it's not...

The shade selection was a bit of a puzzle, they all seem to run a little yellow, but I picked up shade Classic Ivory 20, which matched fairly decently, but not perfectly.

The packaging is quite sleek and it has a nice pump which is always a plus! And the pump works particularly well with this formula, as it is a bit on the thicker side, and therefore really dispenses the perfect amount.

As you can maybe tell from this hand swatch, it seems to really melt into the skin and blend nicely. It also felt quite nice to the touch so I was excited about it and moved on to my face.

I first applied this with a buffing brush and instantly hated how it looked, so I removed it and started over with a Beauty Blender and quite liked that finish. I didn't even powder and somehow within minutes (ok maybe not that fast, but I swear under an hour) it was looking cakey as F.

Now is the time I publicly embarrass myself and insert a completely unedited photo to prove my point. SOMEONE HOLD MY HAND!

I would like to mention the following ; I am only 26 years old, my skin is combination/oily, I do have large pores and a few fine lines (but this foundation made me discover ALL my wrinkles) and I did use a primer. What in the world?

So let's recap ; this foundation accentuates fine lines (*aheum* wrinkles *aheum*), pores, and imperfections, clings to dry patches yet makes you oily in no time, looks cakey and unnatural, has poor lasting power (though maybe if I had powdered it would last longer, but would make every other con mentioned even worse...) and it oxidizes on the skin.

Some redeeming points? It has fairly good coverage (medium to full), and the previously mentioned sleek and practical packaging. Eum...Yeah that's about it.

This foundation claims to improve the look of your skin in as little as 3 weeks ("reduces the appearance of spots, dullness and uneveness and gives you a brighter, more even and stress-free skin."), but quite frankly I don't feel like looking like a hot mess in the mean time. So I can't vouch for those claims, and I can't be bothered to find out.

Needless to say, I would not recommend this foundation. I'm not sure what skin types this would suit...Maybe if you had super smooth and normal skin?

What do you think? Have you tried this foundation? I would love to hear a success story and what you loved about it!

Talk to you soon!
-Xoxo, Val
